Moving Forward: Confidence, Skills and Progression

Supporting adults to recognise their strengths and take their next step with confidence.

Many adults have developed valuable skills and experience through work, volunteering and everyday life, yet often struggle to recognise or communicate what they have achieved. Moving Forward is a structured group programme designed to help participants build confidence, identify their strengths and prepare for progression into employment, further education, training or increased responsibility within their current roles. It was developed specifically for Community Employment (CE) participants and combines practical employability skills with a supportive, strengths-based approach to learning.

What makes the programme different?

Rather than focusing solely on CV writing or interview preparation, Moving Forward begins by helping participants recognise the value of their existing skills and experience. Through discussion, practical activities and reflection, participants gradually build the confidence to communicate what they can offer and explore realistic next steps at a pace that suits them. The programme is underpinned by adult and community education principles, recognising that confidence develops through participation, encouragement and supportive learning environments.

Participants will explore

  • Recognising existing skills, strengths and achievements

  • Building confidence and self-belief

  • Communication in everyday and workplace situations

  • Responding positively to challenges and uncertainty

  • Developing a professional CV

  • Preparing for interviews in a supportive environment

  • Goal setting and realistic progression planning

  • Identifying opportunities for employment, education or further training

Learning Approach

Sessions are practical, discussion-led and highly participative, encouraging learners to reflect on their own experiences while learning from others within the group. The programme creates a supportive, inclusive environment where participants can ask questions, share ideas and build confidence over time. Learning is adapted to the needs, pace and experience of each group, recognising that every participant brings valuable knowledge and different aspirations.

Programme Format

Moving Forward is typically delivered as an eight-week programme through interactive group workshops, with optional one-to-one progression sessions available to support individual goals and next steps.
